Why Choose an Eco Friendly Hair Brush?

Eco friendly hair brushes are a plastic-free option that are made from materials that are biodegradable, so they can be composted instead of being added to a landfill. In general, plastic and aluminum hair brushes are tough to recycle since they are made of a variety of materials, and end up in landfills at the end of their life.

You don’t have to sacrifice results – in fact, many users experience reduced static and a nice scalp massage with a wooden hair brush. Some wood hair brushes, like the olive wood hair brush, are particularly beautiful and can double as a nice decorative touch.

What to Look for in an Eco Friendly Hair Brush

Materials

Most eco-friendly hair brushes will be made of wood, natural rubber, fiber bristles, or a combination. Anything described as “vegan boar bristles” is usually code for plastic.

Some brushes made of bioplastics are marketed as a more sustainable option than regular plastic brushes. Bioplastics are plastics made from renewable sources such as sugarcane instead of petroleum. Whether or not bioplastics break down any better than regular plastic is dependent on the conditions it’s under as well as how and what the item was made of. It can be confusing! In general, the most sustainable option is to go with a known, compostable material such as wood.

Ethical Business Practices

When selecting an eco-friendly hair brush, I suggest looking into the ethics of the company. It would be unfortunate to select an eco-friendly hair brush that actually contributes to deforestation, for example. The TEK hair brush referenced above is a great example of a product that references the certifications the company has received, vouching for its ethical practices.

Quality

Purchasing a product that is quality is important, so you’re not having to replace a broken hair brush all the time. Sometimes, more expensive products last longer, but not always. Consider which one works for your budget, and then clean it regularly to keep it looking new. The longer something lasts, the less it needs to be replaced, which is a sustainable practice.

Hair Texture and Styling Capabilities

Depending on your hair type, length, and your needs, you may consider different styles of hair brushes.

If you have short or fine hair, or are looking for loose waves for a blowout, a round hair brush with boar bristles can work well to smooth and shape the hair. Boar bristles help create tension needed for a smooth, bouncy blowout.

If you have medium or long, straight hair, I recommend a paddle hair brush. The wide, large face of a paddle brush allows a lot of hair to be brushed at once.

Other than that, a good rule of thumb is to use a larger brush for longer hair, and a smaller brush for shorter hair.

Keep in mind that wooden hair brushes in general work best when used on damp hair after hair is about 80 percent dry. This will help reduce any hair breakage and prolong the life of your hair brush.

FAQs

Are hair brushes recyclable?

Most hair brushes are not recyclable due to the combination of material (plastic, boar bristles, rubber, etc.). They usually need to be tossed into the garbage. However, I came across a recycling program that lets you send in your plastic hair brush for recycling through Tangle Teezer and Terracycle

Wood hair brushes (such as those linked in this article) are biodegradable and compostable as long as all the parts are natural.

What is the healthiest hair brush to use?

The healthiest hair brush to use is the one you enjoy using. Hair brushing distributes oils throughout your hair, massages your scalp, increases circulation, and detangles your hair. After that, selecting a brush that works for your hair type, length, and texture and is an eco-friendly option is a great choice.
