Potty Chairs vs. Potty Seats

Before we break down the best easy-to-clean potty chairs, let’s first talk about potty chairs vs. potty seats. There is a difference!

When I decided to potty train my daughter, I started with a potty chair instead of a potty seat

Potty chairs are free-standing, portable, and kid-sized. Potty chairs are a great option to start potty training with since they are kid-sized and allow for your child’s feet to rest on the floor, which the Mayo Clinic recommends as a consideration when potty training.

That said, potty chairs generally require more cleanup since the waste is disposed directly into the bowl vs. a potty seat which is used with an adult toilet.

Potty seats, or inserts, are used on top of an adult toilet seat. They allow waste to be eliminated directly into an adult potty, which means you don’t have to clean up waste.

I have included potty chairs and seats in the list below in my recommendations. You can choose which style works best for you based on your home, lifestyle, and child.

Best Easy-to-Clean Potty Chairs

Best Overall: BabyBjörn Potty Chair

BabyBjörn Potty Chair, Gray/White
  • Comfortable potty chair with backrest and armrests
  • Sturdy design with rubber strip underneath
  • High splashguard prevents spills

This potty chair sits at the top of many Best Potty Chair lists, for good reason!

The ergonomic design allows your toddler to rest comfortably while using the backrest and armrests, and the height allows for independent sitting down and standing up.

The BabyBjorn Potty Chair has a removable bowl that is easy for you to empty and clean – I can attest from personal experience!

This was my daughter’s go-to potty chair; cleaning it was a breeze. The inner pot is easy to remove and dump into an adult toilet, and the smooth surfaces are easy to spray and wipe.

Customers, including our founder, Kait, agree that this potty chair is a great option for boys who need a high splashguard as this splashguard comes up higher than others.

Overall, this is a great potty chair for toddlers (and parents) to start with on their potty training journey.

Pros:

  • Easy to empty and clean the bowl
  • Smooth easy-to-clean surfaces
  • High splash guard prevents spills
  • Light and compact enough to move throughout the house
  • Rubber strip underneath the chair prevents sliding

Cons:

  • A little bulky for travel, this did not fit in my stroller undercarriage

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 14.21 x 14.13 x 12.4 inches
  • Weight: 1.9 pounds

Best Portable: OXO Tot 2-in-1 Go Potty

OXO Tot 2-in-1 Go Potty – Gray, 1 Count (Pack of 1)
  • Opens quickly and easily for on-the-go potty emergencies
  • Smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces
  • Can be used flat on toilets; legs lock open for use as a standalone potty

The OXO Tot 2-in-1 Go Potty is my favorite for travel, whether a short walk to the park, driving around town, or flying across the country. It is lightweight, easy to open, and includes a carrying case which is convenient to carry potty liners and wipes.

The 2-in-1 refers to the two uses this potty offers – a stand-alone chair or as a seat on top of an adult potty. Flexibility can be very helpful for emergencies!

A potential downside to this potty is that it can require potty liners, which can be costly and are not eco-friendly. I haven’t found this to be a major drawback as we only occasionally use this potty while on the go, and it isn’t our daily potty.

Pros:

  • Opens quickly and easy
  • Smooth easy-to-clean surfaces
  • Multi-use: can be used flat on toilets or with legs down as a stand-alone potty

Cons:

  • Wasteful if using plastic bags
  • No backrest, might not be comfortable for consistent long-term use

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 10.75″L x 10″W
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds

Best Low Profile Design: BabyBjörn Smart Potty

Sale
BabyBjörn Smart Potty, White/Gray
  • Compact and practical potty – At home and on trips
  • Sturdy and comfy to use
  • Easy to empty and clean

BabyBjorn offers the Smart Potty as a compact alternative to the top-ranked BabyBjörn Potty Chair. Like the larger version, the inner potty is easy to remove dump, and clean.

This potty has a lower profile than the larger version and lacks the backrest and armrests, which might be helpful for longer potty visits.

Our founder Kait always keeps this potty chair in the back of her SUV for emergency potty breaks. She can also stuff it below her stroller and has even managed to pack it in her son’s carry-on suitcase for travel.

If you like this style, it’s a useful secondary potty chair to the BabyBjorn Potty Chair.

Pros:

  • Smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces
  • Splash guard
  • Easy to empty and clean

Cons:

  • Might be a little small for older toddlers
  • No backrest, might not be as comfortable or supportive as a chair with a backrest

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 12.64 x 10.04 x 6.81 inches
  • Weight: 1.1 pounds

Best Potty Seat: BabyBjörn Toilet Trainer

BABYBJORN Toilet Trainer – White/Black, 11.5x14x3.5 Inch (Pack of 1)
  • Comfortable and secure seating; ergonomic design helps your child sit correctly
  • Easy for the child; When it’s time to go, your child can easily put on and remove the toilet trainer on his or her own
  • Flexible use; The toilet trainer only needs to be adjusted once to fit your toilet seat

The BabyBjorn Toilet Trainer offers comfortable seating on top of an adult toilet if you need a potty seat instead of a potty chair. Waste is eliminated directly into the adult toilet, so there is no additional cleanup!

Potty seats can be intimidating for toddlers since they are used on top of adult toilets. They also might require a step stool so your toddler can get on top of the toilet.

Before purchasing, determine what type of toilet seat you have. Some seats are round, and others are oval or elongated in shape. Choose the version of this toilet seat that is compatible with your toilet(s).

Not sure? Choose the adjustable version of the seat.

Pros:

  • Waste is eliminated directly into the toilet, no need for dumping and cleaning
  • Comfortable and secure seating; ergonomic design helps your child sit correctly
  • Easy for the child; when it’s time to go, your child can easily put on and remove the toilet trainer on his or her own

Best Budget Potty Chair: Ikea Lockig

Ikea’s Lockig potty is a great value option. It is nearly half the price of a typical potty chair, and it still allows a toddler to independently use the potty.

The removable bowl allows for easy cleaning. A potential drawback is the opening crevice below the bowl handle, the space might attract spillage or dust.

Pros:

  • Removable insert
  • Splash guard

Cons:

  • Handle opening between the insert and seat might attract spillage or dust

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 14”L x 10”W x 11”H
  • Weight: Not available

What to Look for in an Easy-to-Clean Potty Chair

Removable inner pot

A removable inner pot allows you to directly dump the waste into the adult toilet. If a chair does not have a removable inner pot, you’ll have to physically pick up the whole chair and dump it.

Removable inner pots are easier to clean as you are only cleaning the insert rather than an entire potty after each use.

Moreover, make sure the inner pot is quick and easy to access. Some inner pots or inner pot handles are beneath a seat, so you have to remove a lid and then an insert which results in more surface areas to clean. This is cumbersome if your little one uses the potty 5 – 7 times daily!

Smooth, flat surfaces

Smooth, flat surfaces are easier to clean than potty chairs with many handles or elements that stick out.

Dumping, rinsing, and wiping the inner pot dry with toilet paper is quicker and less cumbersome than having to dig into crevices after each use.

Splash guard

Particularly helpful for boys, splash guards prevent spills outside the toilet. No one wants to clean the floor in addition to cleaning the potty seat!

Stability & Comfort

Rubber bottoms prevent the potty chair from sliding around on the floor. This feature will make your toddler feel stable and secure while getting comfortable with the potty chair. Moreover, a rubber bottom will keep the chair stable to prevent any spillage.

Backrests and armrests allow your toddler to comfortably rest on the potty chair. Comfort might help get your toddler on the potty chair more readily than an uncomfortable one.

Helpful Accessories for Clean Potty Training

Disinfecting Wipes or Spray

Whether you disinfect your potty chair after every use, after a #2, or daily, you’ll need a disinfectant to get the job done.

Disinfecting spray is perfect for cleaning a potty chair at home, but when you’re on the go (e.g. back of the car potty), disinfecting wipes might be your best bet when cleaning up after a #2.

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are mostly helpful if you’re potty training on the go. If you have a potty in the back of your car or in your stroller, make sure to also pack a bag or two.

Plastic bags come in handy on the go, especially when a #2 is involved. You can toss soiled wipes and even dump the actual #2 into a plastic bag to toss in the trash.

Plastic bags are also a great way to transport soiled clothes home from an outing.

Some travel potties, like the OXO 2-in-1, require a plastic bag to capture waste while on the go. They offer plastic bags with pads in the bottom to help absorb the waste, or you can use a normal plastic bag.

Wet Wipes

We still rely on wet wipes for wiping, especially after a messy #2!

If you prefer disposable wipes but want to be mindful of their environmental impact, consider investing in compostable or biodegradable wipes

Paper Towels or Cleaning Cloths

Paper towels are a useful option when you need to disinfect your potty. After dumping and rinsing, you’ll spray your potty with disinfectant spray and wipe dry.

If you’re going paper-free, then opt for a cleaning cloth instead. I recommend wiping most of the mess out of the potty chair bowl with toilet paper and then using a washable cleaning cloth to dry it after disinfecting.

Potty Pads

If you are potty training boys who have trouble keeping it “in the pot,” potty pads might be a worthwhile investment. This is especially true if your little one’s potty chair is located on a carpeted surface in your home (or on the go in the back of your car).

To keep things eco-friendly, you could also fold a thick towel underneath the potty chair to absorb spills before they reach your floor.

If the towel gets soiled, it can be easily cleaned in the washing machine for future use.

Hand Sanitizer

Clean hands are a must! Soap and water are the ultimate path to clean hands, but if you’re traveling and not near a sink, hand sanitizer is a must –  especially after cleaning a #2.

FAQs

What is the best way to clean a potty chair?

Empty, rinse, wipe, and disinfect. Here is a more detailed article on how to clean your potty chair.

What is the best potty chair disinfectant?

We recommend 3 options for disinfectant. These options are safer than bleach, and if you use a commercial product, you may need to rinse the potty again so that your toddler’s skin is not coming in contact with any harsh chemicals.

Option 1: 1 cup of water mixed with ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide

Option 2: ½ cup water mixed with ½ cup white vinegar

Option 3: Force of Nature is an EPA-registered disinfectant that is free of fragrances, preservatives, quats, dyes, and surfactants. The technology behind their formula is impressive and effective – one that I would feel safe using on toddler items.

How often should I disinfect a potty chair?

You can disinfect after every use, after every #2, or once at the end of every day. Use your best judgment here!
